KSJ Hamburg/Germany
Pupils spend the majority of their time at school. It is a part of their life almost as essential as their parents and their peer group. To influence it and help shape it we formed the KSJ right in the schools. We create a network between younger and older pupils and counter the spirit of increasing pressure, utilitarianism and competition with true solidarity.
The KSJ is a youth organisation within the Catholic Church. Our key values and the search for our own spirituality reflect our commitment to Christian Faith. At the same time we consider it essential to critically evaluate the existing structures within the Church and its stance on current issues. As a Catholic students’ organisation we are open for everybody who wants to get involved with our program and the issues we concern ourselves with, no matter what philosophy, ideology or denomination.
Groups form the basis of our organisation. In weekly meetings, pupils from fifth grade onwards take responsibility for their own free time, guided by trained young boys and girls who help them plan and carry out meetings and activities. Democracy and participation are just as important to us as commitment and fun. Annual summer camps, vacation programs and other activities form the highlights of life in the youth organisation. The peer group is the heart of the organisation and provides ideal conditions for experiencing and practising socialised learning and for exploring one’s own capabilities. With our educational work we provide an important space for socialization complementing parental home and school.
The KSJ is based on a grassroots democracy. Acting and thinking democratically is a focal point on all levels and for all age groups. The structure of the organisation results from the concept of “Youth leading Youth”. Within the KSJ young people assume responsibility as leaders of a group of younger ones, in order to take the position of being their model and (a) confidant (or: and to become/be their model and (a) confidant) serving as role models and a confidant. Our group leaders meet on a regular basis in a council to debate organisational issues, but also more serious topics related to their work. On all levels, political and theological leaders are elected democratically. The work of the KSJ is rooted in the enthusiasm of its volunteers and their identification with the organisation. Their willingness to commit themselves without any financial reward is a major characteristic of our organisation.
